The pride of flying solo as a woman in small business

I’ve discussed this so many time with my female biz buddies - the common practice of using "we" when talking about and marketing our businesses. The consensus is often that using “we” is seen as a way to appear more established and professional, even if you're running the show solo.

Personally, this doesn’t sit well with me. What if we challenged that notion? What if, instead, we celebrate the power and pride of using "I" and embrace our identity as one woman band small business owners?

Let's explore why using "I" is not just fine, but a badge of honour. Stick with me - I promise I’m going to convince you.

The myth of "We"

Misleading perception

Using "we" can sometimes create a false impression of a larger team behind the scenes. While it might make your business seem more substantial, it can also be misleading. Clients appreciate honesty and transparency and pretending to be something we're not can undermine that trust. By using "I," we can be upfront about our solo status, building a foundation of honesty from the get go.

Pressure to conform

There's a capitalist, patriarchal societal pressure to appear bigger and more established. The notion that bigger is always better is deeply (horribly) ingrained in business culture. However, as small business owners, we know that quality, passion and personal touch often come from smaller, more dedicated operations. Challenging this norm allows us to redefine success on our own terms.

The power of "I"

Authenticity and honesty

Being true to yourself and your business is invaluable. Using "I" in your communication builds trust and credibility. It tells your clients that they're dealing directly with the person who cares most about the business. Authenticity resonates and clients can tell when you're being genuine.

Personal connection

As a one woman band, you have a unique ability to connect personally with your audience. Sharing personal stories and experiences makes your business relatable and memorable. Clients love knowing the person behind the brand and this connection can set you apart in a crowded market.

Celebrating individual achievements

Running a small business solo means every success is YOUR success. Share these personal achievements with pride - I want you to shout them from the bloody roof top! Whether it's reaching a sales milestone, launching a new product or receiving positive feedback, these moments are all the more special when you own them fully.

Versatility and skills

As a solo entrepreneur, you juggle a wide range of roles and responsibilities both personal and professional. This versatility is a testament to your skills and dedication. From marketing and customer service to product development and accounting, you're the heartbeat of your business and keeping all those plates spinning. (Well mostly - we all drop a plate from time to time). Celebrate this adaptability and the strength and energy it takes to manage it all.

Control and vision

One of the greatest benefits of being a one woman show is having complete control over your business decisions. Your vision and purpose remain clear and undiluted. You can steer your business exactly where you want it to go, without compromising on your values or goals.

Building genuine relationships

Clients appreciate the direct interaction they get with the business owner. By using "I," you're inviting them into a genuine relationship with you. Share testimonials or stories from clients who value this personal touch. These connections can lead to lasting loyalty and word of mouth referrals.

Setting realistic expectations

Being upfront about your solo status helps manage client expectations. They know they're getting your full attention and expertise. Emphasise the quality and attention to detail they receive from working directly with you. This honesty can build stronger, more trusting client relationships.

Finding community

While you may run your business solo, you don't have to do it all alone. Join networks and communities of fellow solo entrepreneurs. Shouting out my Work From Home ladies here! Connecting with like minded business owners who understand your journey and can offer support and accountability or be your cheerleader and the occasional shoulder to cry on is, in my experience, invaluable.

Be proud! Own your solo business journey and use "I" confidently in how you talk about and market your business. Your clients will appreciate the authenticity, and you'll build stronger, more genuine relationships.

Running a one woman business can be bloody hard but it’s also filled with joy and fulfilment. Every achievement is a testament to your hard work and dedication. So, let's celebrate our individuality and the unique strengths we bring to the table. Share your experiences, connect with others and continue to shine as the incredible female solo entrepreneurs we are.

Did I convince you? How do you talk about your business? Do you use “we” or “I?” I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
