Capturing B-Roll Content for Your Social Media Marketing

When it comes to social media marketing there’s a secret ingredient that can make your content, whether a Reel or Story, more engaging: B-roll.

What Is B-Roll?

You might have heard the term thrown about with abandon by social media managers (sorry we do that sometimes) but it’s actually really straight forward. B-roll refers to secondary footage or supplementary shots that you’ve captured, usually on your smart phone, that depict you and your brand.

It helps set the tone, provides context and adds variety to your social media videos or posts. It’s best used as a background to a post with text overlay which provides the detail.

Here are a couple of examples of how I’ve used B-roll footage:

How to Capture B-Roll Content

Capturing B-roll doesn’t require high end equipment, your smartphone is enough. When you see something interesting or engaging capture 10-30 seconds of video and keep it in your camera roll until you’re ready to use it (I recommend setting up a folder for easy access). Try and capture something every day. It soon becomes a habit and you have loads of content to draw on when you need it.

The key is to not over think it and focus on small, everyday actions that tell a story and complement your brand message. Here are a few B-roll ideas you can easily capture for your social media marketing depending on what you do and what your brand vibe is:

1. Pouring a morning drink

Start your morning with a simple shot of you pouring a cup of coffee, tea or smoothie. This shot can convey a sense of routine, comfort or relaxation. Whether it’s a close up of the coffee pouring into a cup or the steam rising, it sets a warm, welcoming tone for your content.

2. Writing notes

Capture yourself jotting down notes or making a to-do list. This type of shot adds a personal touch and can be used to show how you’re preparing for your day or brainstorming ideas. It works well for showing productivity or intention.

3. Cooking prep

If you’re in the kitchen, film the process of chopping vegetables, stirring a pot or laying out ingredients. Cooking B-roll can be used to highlight creativity, the art of preparing something from scratch or simply enjoying the moment of making something delicious.

4. Walking into/out of a room

A simple shot of you walking into or out of a room adds natural movement to your video. It’s a subtle way to show transitions or set the scene. You can capture the action in a hallway, office or any setting that fits your brand’s vibe.

5. Phone scrolling

People love seeing behind the scenes moments and capturing a shot of you scrolling through your phone is a great way to add authenticity. This works especially well in a video where you're talking about research, trends or staying updated on social media.

6. Flicking a light switch/lamp on

This is a quick and easy shot that adds a bit of action. It can convey the idea of starting something new, creating ambiance or simply brightening up your space. It can be paired with text discussing productivity or a fresh start.

7. Putting on shoes and coat

A shot of you putting on your shoes or coat can be used to show preparation or transition, whether you’re heading out to work, a meeting or a weekend adventure. It works well for content about getting ready, taking action or going on a journey.

8. Doodling

Doodling is an ideal B-roll idea to use if you’re trying to convey creativity, brainstorming or relaxing. A quick shot of scribbling in a notebook or sketching can be paired with tips on inspiration or working through ideas.

9. Putting flowers in a vase

Whether it’s a quick flower arrangement or just the act of placing them in a vase, this type of B-roll can give your content a calm, uplifting feel. It works well with lifestyle, wellness or home decor themes.

10. Lighting a candle

Lighting a candle is another calming, atmospheric B-roll shot. It’s often used in content that’s about relaxation, mindfulness or creating a peaceful environment. It helps evoke a sense of warmth, self care and thoughtfulness.

11. Eating your favourite lunch

Capture a moment of eating your favourite lunch, whether it’s a quick snack or a hearty meal. It can add a personal touch to your content and showcase your lifestyle, values or love for simple pleasures.

12. Video call with a client

If your business involves working with clients, capturing a shot of a video call is a great way to show behind the scenes. It demonstrates your professional side while keeping things relatable. Bonus points if you capture moments of collaboration or discussion.

13. Daily walk

A daily walk is an easy and peaceful B-roll shot. It shows a personal routine or habit and it adds a calming vibe to your content. It’s great for lifestyle, wellness or balance focused content. Whether you’re walking in nature or around your neighbourhood, it creates a sense of calm and connection.

As I said earlier, the more you do it, the easier it becomes and you start to spot content opportunities everywhere! It’s a really easy and effective way to create video content for your social media marketing and will make your accounts personal, relatable and interesting.
